Tom Brady

9 July 2009

no. Tom Brady? Not even with his super-model love life.

Only Jack Nicklaus' 18 Grand Slam titles is, for now, preventing Tiger from dominating the conversation as the all-time greatest golfer. Yet, for all Tiger's accomplishments, 68 titles, 14 majors at age 33, he's simply not the greatest athlete of his generation.

As football fans across the globe cast their longing eyes in the direction of the April draft, I decided that now might be a good time to reflect on draft classes of the last 10 years. Too often in this business, we rush ahead to the next big event without taking pause to evaluate the past and learn from it. In a way, this study will still be a celebration of the coming 2009 draft as I believe it will shed some light on certain overlooked trends that no one ever stops to consider. I will begin with a class by class showdown of sorts at the quarterback position over the last 10 drafts.  First up, we have the class of 1999 taking on that of 2000:

Yankee orginization and left football, Scott Driesbach and the one you've all been waiting for Tom Brady. That being said that amounts to 491 career NFL games combined between the nine of them even though I could not find stats for Hensen, Navarre, and Driesbach. 491 games and counting. My point you ask? This is the end of another streak, or tradition or call it what you want that ol' Rich Rod has brought to the Michigan faithful. UM no longer has a 33 straight bowl appearance streak, they now own the only nine loss record in team history, continuing the losses to Ohio State, losing to the " Greenies " at home for only the third time in my life and whatever else he brought from the mountains...I can assure you that even if the Wolverines had another two or three un-Michigan like sub par seasons under Lloyd Carr, Ryan Mallett who transfered to Arkansas, had all the tools necessary, would have been the tenth on the list of NFL quarterbacks from the Maize and Blue. If you watched any of the games this year it is quite easy to see that Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan will not be added to that list. Sheridan may get to the NFL but only if his father brings him on as a coach, towel boy or parking lot attendant. The two combined will not see one minute of NFL playing time at the quarterback position. NOT ONE MINUTE, as compared to the 29,460 combined minutes of the other nine. If my math serves me correctly, and i'll give them the benefit of the doubt, that leaves them 29,259 minutes short.

legitimate chance of making the post season in a year that seemed that all hope was gone.

Tom Brady should be nervous. After all, it seems like Karma to me. Brady did it to Bledsoe, so it was only a matter of time. Speaking of similarities, I see Bill Belichick standing behind Matt Cassel rubbing his hands together and laughing maniacally like a mad scientist. This is a formula. And this is what Bill Belichick had in mind the entire time.

this coming Sunday against the Pats, but for how long?

1.      Tom Brady (NE)—In one play, the Patriots went from Super Bowl favorites to neglected dark horses.

me is the toll taken on your body.  Recently we have seen that in the early season injuries to Tom Brady and now the probable career-ender for Patriots SS Rodney Harrison.  Two of the most respected and admired (for different reasons) players in the NFL have combined arguably for two of the unluckiest seasons so far.

Two - have a quarterback that is in the top 5 in the league – Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Joe Montana, etc. Three - have a top 5, dominating defense.-the Bucanneers, the Ravens, the Steelers. Now, if you have two or three of these things then you are well on your way. If you don’t have any, well – you get better on defense, get a better quarterback, and/or get a better coach. Why do you think that the league was so engaged in the Bret Farve saga that ratings even went down on “As the World Turns” during the summer?  Or why did the Kansas City Chiefs take a flyer on often injured Joe Montana (oh yeah-they made it to the playoffs didn’t they). Why do you think that people like Parcells and Bill Cowher, and retreads like Joe Gibbs and Dick Vermeil are courted like Queen Guinevere in a short skirt? This is how you create the culture that other franchises have and the Houston Texans don’t.

up to Dolphins' Week 3 matchup against New England reportedly saying that Matt Cassel was "no Tom Brady" and guaranteeing the Dolphins' win. Now, two weeks later to the Miami Herald, Porter says he didn't say any of that and that his quotes got construed. What he did say, according to Porter, was that the Fins would "try" to get a win. He did tell the press that he thought the practice of talking up opponents made them sound like "robots," and that he wasn't going to talk like everyone else becuase that's not how people really think.

Doesn't the Patriots defense realize that with Brady out for the year that they not only need to show up, but they need to play well for NE to have any chance of winning.

Cassel was no Tom B yesterday, but things could have been much worse, on the offensive side anyway.

What better way to start my life as a sports blogger than this. It is my opening post, yet more importantly to the sports fan it is Pro Football Eve!!! That's right.  Football is back and the 5 month holiday is "The Most wonderful Time of the Year", but only some of us will get presents. Santa Coughlin may be in the giving mood again. It is more likely however,  that Giselle will lead the Patriot fans in a Marilyn Monroe inspired "Santa Bra-dy", asking for that "one thing, a ring".

Say what you want about its lack of longevity (let's face it, this is only interesting because Tom Brady and Peyton Manning make it interesting) compared to longtime spats like Chiefs/Raiders, frankly, it doesn't matter. Games between the Pats and the Colts have become events in of themselves. Two years ago the AFC Championship was dubbed the "real" Super Bowl. The regular season matchups between these two draw more media attention and hoopla then some playoff games.

acks for some reason.  I do not get excited to watch great quarterbacks like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.  They just don't do anything that will surprise me or make me blink twice to see if that really happen.  I just see other quarterbacks staying in the pocket.  Favre is all over the place.  This is what separated from other quarterbacks.  This is what made him such an icon he is.  Millions loved to watch him.  Millions are going to hate to say goodbye.
