Texas Longhorns

16 October 2009

In an amazing display of terrible, brutal football my team is winless.  It's not like I'm knocking on the door or even pretending to be in close games.  I am BAD.  Brutal.  TERRIBLE.  I feel like the classic winless Bucs, not the Lions of last year.. the team that was so brutal when they asked their head coach, "What do you think of your team's execution?"  He replied, "I'm all for it."  That's how I feel with big name, little production players like Colt McCoy, Julio Jones, and Regis Benn leading the charge.  These guys are stiffs right now, Benn can't find the end zone with a map.  The last time Julio Jones scored gas was under $1.20 a gallon and the internet hadn't been invented yet.

than 100 days before the start of the 2009 college football season and it's time to break down the Texas Longhorns.

What we know about the Longhorns:

The Texas Longhorns are primed for a run at the national championship. With QB Colt McCoy returning for his senior season after breaking the record for completion percentage in a single season last year with a ridiculous 76.7%, topping Daunte Culpepper's previous record, the Longhorn's passing attack should be lethal. Texas graduated receiver Quan Cosby but return star receiver Jordan Shipley, along with Brandon Collins, James Kirkendoll, and deep threat Malcolm Williams. The running game was questionable at best last season for the Longhorns, but look for 240 lb. RB Cody Johnson to bring some consistency to the position, as he had a great spring before tweaking his hamstring. Fozzy Wittaker provides a great change of pace back to compliment Johnson, as will RB Vondrell McGee. FB Antwann Cobb is back from his injury and flashed some great blocking in the spring game. The O-line should be a strength for the Longhorns as they are a very mature group with a lot of experience. Pass blocking hasn't been an issue; however, one of the goals of the spring was to improve the run blocking and bring some "nastiness" back to the O-line. The Defensive side of the ball looks to improve this season after leading the NCAA in sacks last season. The Longhorns lost All-American DE Brian Orakpo, stud DT Roy Miller, and DE Henry Melton to the NFL draft, but they return DE Sergio Kindle who recorded 10 sacks last season and was a nightmare off the edge for offensive tackles and opposing QBs. Lamarr Houston and Kheston Randle should handle the both the DT positions but depth is a concern. The DE position should be stacked with Sergio Kindle, Sam Acho, Eddie Jones, Russell Carter, and freshman Alex Okafor all competing for playing time. The Longhorns are stacked at LB as well with seniors Roddrick Muckleroy and Jared Norton returning, along with speedy OLBs Keenan Robinson and Emannuel Acho. The big question mark last year becomes one of this year's biggest strengths. It may be one of the most athletic defensive backfields manned by secondary coach Duane Akina, just behind the 2005 all star cast. Look for CB Aaron Williams to be a breakout player and lead the team in INTs, as he has incredible ball skills. CB Chykie Brown will be a lock-down defender at the other CB spot while Curtis Brown and Deon Beasley provide good depth at the position. At the safety position the Longhorns return both of their starters in freshman All-American Earl Thomas, who had a great spring, and Blake Gideon. Look for hard hitting S Christian Scott to get a lot of playing time too, as he is just too physically gifted to keep off the field.

The Red Raiders beat the Texas Longhorns who in turn beat Oklahoma, who beat Texas Tech and the Sooners get in on style points. Hmmmmm... It was not that long ago in 2006, the number two Michigan Wolverines were jumped by the Florida Gators ( number four at the time ) to get into the BCS Championship game instead of having a rematch for the national title between Michigan and Ohio State. The reason Florida got in…style points. They played one more game than did Michigan and got enough style points to leap frog Michigan by running the score up 62-0 on Western Carolina.

I watched the game with high expectations of the Texas Longhorns, the team many were saying should be #1 and playing in the national title game on Thursday.

Boy was I dissappointed! The first drive of Texas resulted in no first downs and a punt and my son, Aaron, says to me, "Dad it is normal for a team to start out slow" to which I agreed. Then at the end of the 1st quarter, with Ohio State winning by a field goal (3-0), I was really starting to wonder where this highly regarded Texas team was? I mean, this couldn't be the same team that beat Oklahoma, and played in what I consider to be the best game of the season, vs Texas Tech could it? This couldn't be the same team with Colt McCoy, Heisman runner up!

So, after last night all of the bowl match ups are set and it's time to go bowling.  For better or for worse.  Our National championship game was predicted weeks ago (predicated on The Gators beating the Tide).  So it's final, Florida VS Oklahoma - January 8th at 7PM E on FOX.  Later we'll get into the BCS as it currently stands versus an ever more popular idea of a National Playoff System.  Until then, here is a complete list of all upcoming bowl games:

Yesterday night, this year's lineup of bowl games was released. As far as the BCS matchups go, there were really no surprises: Utah vs. Alabama in the Sugar, OSU vs. Texas in the Fiesta, Penn State vs. USC in the Rose, Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech in the Orange, and, of course, Florida vs. Oklahoma in the title game.

the Big 12 Championship Game as well as a probable spot in the BCS Championship Game over the rival Texas Longhorns. The BCS did exactly what it was supposed to do. It chose the better team. Problem is, thats not exactly fair.

The last image I had in my mind when I went to bed last night was Sam Bradford’s smug face placating my television screen. His careless and UN-Interested demeanor just added to my frustration over Oklahoma’s 61-41 victory Saturday night.

Shonn Greene for the Heisman!  Is anyone with me?  Ok, I won't get that extreme, because I, along with other knowledgable college football fans, know that Sam Bradford should run away with the award.  Bradford's TD/Int Ratio has him as the front-runner for the Heisman, not to mention the fact that he's on a championship contending team.  It seems like that is the only thing voters are going to be caring to look for this year.  As I believe that Bradford should win, I believe that he is the only player who should be ahead of Shonn Greene.

Much was made of the Texas Longhorns' run through the 'gauntlet' of Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Tech. Don't forget that the Red Raiders are finishing their own gauntlet of Kansas (who was ranked until the Tech demolished them), Texas, Oklahoma State, and now Oklahoma. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has had "get well" games scattered through their Big 12 schedule.  So, Tech has earned their dues.

undefeated, and yes unproven, Ball State or Boise State-they are going to take a position from the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, or the machine that has been the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Only two teams from any conference can compete in a BCS Bowl game during a given season. So, as spots are guaranteed to the ACC and the Big East, eating up possible bowl game positions, they will exclude the deserving and make match-ups after New Years that will send us quickly into basketball season. Do you really want to see Florida vs. Cincinnati?

What's up football fans?  Get ready for another high scoring week in Big 12 football, the deepest and most talented football conference in the country.  This is my first blog entry, so I thought I would start with my predictions for this upcoming week.  Just so ya know, I was born a Nebraska Cornhusker fan, so my favoritism towards the Huskers and disgust towards it's Big 12 competitors may show in my picks.
