I haven't really written much lately because I've been pretty busy.. of course, that doesn't mean I don't think about football.

1.  Chris Spielman is awesome.  No nonsense, says what he thinks and how he feels.  He expects players to make plays, I wonder if he would ever want to coach.  If so, you've got to give him an interview.. at least.  I guarantee his team would have instant toughness and not hurt themselves.  There are some mid-major programs that could use this guy.

I was listening to ESPN radio when one of the guys, Steve Mason, spoke about a video on the internet that had him rollin'.  I was pretty interested in finding the video and when I did I was shocked, but I had to laugh also.  The tv show Family Guy did its portrayal of Michael Vick and his crime in a short clip from the show.  I am going to stop talking and just show the video:

College football kicked off last night with offensive powerhouse Boise State going up against an equally dangerous offensive team in Oregon.  Everybody expected this game to be in the high 20's or maybe the low 30's; however, the game transformed into a defensive battle making it less entertaining.  The game featured only 27 points combined with the final score being Oregon 8 and Boise State 19.  The real "entertainment", I use that term loosely, came at the end of the game when Oregon RB, LeGarrette Blount punched Boise State's Byron Hout in the face after Hout allegedly taunted him.  You can see the punch below at this address:

Last week, the NCAA gave Alabama a slap on the wrist, giving them three years of probation due to athletes improperly using their textbook benefits. The national media gave the story a bit of play, but it was largely ignored. The talk radio hosts in Columbia, however, latched onto this story immediately. One station talked about the story for roughly five hours on the day the probation was handed down by the NCAA. You would have thought that Alabama had committed a major infraction, rather than just the selling of textbooks. The hosts repeatedly called for scholarship losses.

Who should be the preseason number one for the upcoming NCAA football campaign, you ask? Look no further than the defending champs themselves. The Florida Gators are stacked again on both sides of the ball, and Urban Meyer seems to just now be hitting his coaching stride. So it may very well be a long couple of years for, not only the SEC but, the entire field of football powerhouses.

Will NCAA D1 football get a playoff system?

For me, it's not about the money.

The money that schools and bowls make off of the games isn't relevant for me in any way. I make the journey to Auburn once a year (if I'm lucky), and I fork out the money for the overpriced nose-bleed seats. Sure, I'll buy a pricey hot-dog and soda, but that's about the extent of my monetary investment into the sport. The rest of the season I kick back on the couch and watch from the heated comfort of my home, and I doubt I will ever make that expensive post-season ticket purchase (unless my Tigers go to Nashville, or somewhere like that).

Fans who had withstood dampened tailgates, wet sacks and eggless HamDogs were rewarded with a misleading first half and a lackluster, uninspiring second. I'll be glad in years to come when I can tell my daughters I was there when Larry Munson walked out onto the playing field for the first time during a game and I stood to tip my hat. It is the topic that no one can avoid or stop talking about. Despite a loss to them earlier in the year on a neutral field, Oklahoma gains a trip to the Big 12 Championship Game as well as a probable spot in the BCS Championship Game over the rival Texas Longhorns. The BCS did exactly what it was supposed to do. It chose the better team. Problem is, thats not exactly fair.

Shonn Greene for the Heisman!  Is anyone with me?  Ok, I won't get that extreme, because I, along with other knowledgable college football fans, know that Sam Bradford should run away with the award.  Bradford's TD/Int Ratio has him as the front-runner for the Heisman, not to mention the fact that he's on a championship contending team.  It seems like that is the only thing voters are going to be caring to look for this year.  As I believe that Bradford should win, I believe that he is the only player who should be ahead of Shonn Greene.

As I basked in the glory of the Iowa slaughtering of Minnesota in the last Golden Gopher football game in the Metrodome, I could not help but think about the severe disadvantage Iowa will probably have against whatever opponent it faces in a bowl game. The Hawkeyes will have no live football action from November 22 until, in all likelihood, December 27 (I project them going to the Champs Sports Bowl). This is a problem that faces not only the Iowa Hawkeyes, but every football team in the Big Ten that plays in a bowl game. This could be one of the reasons that the Big Ten has not had a winning bowl season since 2002 and since that year have compiled a record of 14-22. I understand that there are other factors that have led to that record, but there is no doubt this is a severe disadvantage.

Please stand by......the State of the BullDawg Nation address will commence shortly.

If everyone will take their seat we can get started, it's gonna be a busy start to an important week. While we wait for Bernie to take the podium, let's take some time to go over a few announcements. Can you hear me in the back? ...... Good.   Nama's research staff once again reins supreme. He walks away with a case of homebrew from Miranda's basement. Miranda is a true Tech fan and a great (albeit somewhat quiet) supporter of BDB. We can understand why he is reluctant to voice his opinion, especially this close to the BIG game. So we especially appreciate the question and the sponsorship. Nama - don't forget to use a glass. Bye Week Shout-outs: Congrats to Mr. Rolle on what has to be one of  his all time best days Saturday. Myron is obviously a smart young man, so "smart" money is on him choosing Oxford. The students in Dr. Burnette's class. I know your teacher all too well. If Dad starts to correct my writing while in class, please inform the principal....and my mom. Mohamed Massaquoi - happy birthday! Jack Bauer for surrendering himself for the good of the kids! Boomer-Sooners for going all PlayStation 2 on the Red Raiders from Lubbock. My oh My!! Bye Week Suspensions: 790 the Zone for blatant, unabashed bias against Bernie. That's the last 790 contest I bother entering. I guess they know a 680 the Fan listener Florida Gators - just because. When we mapped out our Saturday viewing schedule, we had no idea that the best game of the day would be the Versus Pac-10 matchup. Here's hoping the Beavers de-feather the ducks and create the rematch the granddaddies at the Rose Bowl deserve. And lastly, please don't overindulge on turkey later this week. Everybody loves the underdog, who doesn't get an adrenline rush at the end of Hoosiers and Remember the Titans.  When you get into championship high school sports, the playoffs, there seems to be a group of schools and leagues that year in and year out compete for the Section/State Title. In Division V football in Central California the teams from the Greater Modesto Area have dominated the Section for the past armful of years.  Particularly Central Catholic and Escalon High Schools.  There are both the one constant.

Its Sunday morning and Texas Tech is still trying to digest a healthy dose of reality. Boomer-Sonner indeed. I guess we'll find out later today what the voters think. For now let's see how Bernie did in his advisement.  Ohio State leads Rodriguez to grimmace. But don't believe the rumors that he calls in sick. Rich shows up and even calls a play or two that lead to a TD. Problem is the Buckeyes score more. A LOT more. Yup, pretty much nailed that one. I also predict a tense off-season in Ann Arbor.Clemson is away in Charlottesville, but there is nothing cavalier about their attitude today. They touch that rock Dabo style. Uva keeps it close but Harper hits Kelly early and then late to keep the Tigers thankful for a win before Darth Visor visits. I was distracted by some paint that was drying, but this defensive battle went my way too. A victory over the hated Gamecocks next week may cement Dabo in Clemson Orange.JoePa's Nittany Lions take on Michigan State for a chance to earn a Rose Bowl berth. The Spartans have one of the best backs in college football, but I think Penn State takes care of business at home. JoePa didn't dissapoint, at all. Enjoy Pasadena Joe. It should be a nice vacation to try out the new hip.Oregon State can keep the dream alive in the Tucson desert. 'Zona keeps this one close before the Rodgers brothers take over. Dam! Beavers are still ahead of the mighty trojans.... This turned out to be the game of the day. Kahut missed the XP to tie, then gets an opportunity to redeem himself. The Ducks are the only obstacle in the way of a Rose Bowl rematch that the grandaddies would love to avoid. Go Beavers!! And Bernie is on a roll!Tennessee visits Vandy. The vOwels were a dark horse in the SEC East in the preseason. Now they're just a dead horse. Philmer falters with a team that is clearly not fighting for him. Well.....turns out the dead horse was quite beaten enough. Vandy put up little fight. Can a visiting Kentucky team give Philmer an 8 loss season on his way out of Knoxville?Houston Nutt returns to Death Valley where he thought he had put a fork in the Tigers hopes of a National Championship last season. Problem was those kitties had more than nine lives. This year Nutt has a new team, but the result is the same. Rebels are better than Troy. They can play for 60 minutes. My oh my! Nutt beats Miles' "damn fine football team" with the arm of Snead. A win in the Egg Bowl Friday should send the Rebels to pick some Cotton for New Years.Arkansas at Missy State - if you're reading this one, seek help. I'm picking State just because I like Croom....and Petrino's a dork. The Hawgs continue to play tough football, but Croom added a smear to Petrino's ever updated resume. And another W for Bernie.North Carolina State heads to Chapel Hill to try and put a dent in what has been a shiny season for Butch's Tar Heels. I think this one will be closer than many think. But UNC makes the wolfpack howl in the end. This may be the first time I've underestimated the 'Pack by this much. Butch evidently was satisfied using his words to take himself out of the running for a job in Knoxville or Clemson, he uses his team's play on the field. OUCH!UGA vs. the Bye - we won the last matchup back in early October. The bye came out steaming mad, but the Dawgs recovered nicely and I think this one goes the same way. Take a deep breath Dawgs, the bees are buzzin'. Can't really grade this one out until after the bees come to town.....Citadel goes into the Swamp and many are predicting a blowout. I agree! This one's over by halftime. Citadel 74, gators 3.  Bernie vastly overestimates this Citadel team. But he stands by his prediction on principle. The Big 12 matchup of the week should only take 5 and a half hours to play. Texas Tech takes their future former head coach Mike Leach to Oklahoma and yes they are still #2. I personally would love to see Texas Tech meet Bama for the BCS. Trendy offense with all the flash and sparkle. Versus traditional power that prides itself on smash-mouth. But Oklahoma makes a statement tonight. Boomer-Sooner in a close one. Got the result right, but missed on the closeness of it. Ethically I can only take a half point for this one. Lubbock has lost a little luster.

The weekend sports started off real well, Calaveras dropped Bret Harte to sew up 2nd place in the MLL.  The Redskins will travel to Escalon on Friday to take on the powerful TVL Champion Cougars.  It will be a tough battle for the Redskins, but you every once in a while David takes out Goliath.  The first key is for the players and team to approach the week with the idea that this is what we need to be successful and not focus on anything else.  The coaches will put together a game plan that will give the players a chance to win.  The players needs to trust the coaches and focus on executing the game plan. The focus is not to win, but to execute and when you prepare correctly and execute, the winning will take care of itself.

The Big 12

It’s an intriguing weekend in the Big Ten this week, as all five underdogs are at home.  That is quite the rare feat, and we know that somebody is going to jump up and pull off an upset at home.  So , which team will actually defend its home turf?  I’m going with Michigan, despite the fact they haven’t been doing such a great job of winning at home so far this year.  The three home losses this year have me thinking that the home-field advantage is less of a factor than is the Spartans’ one-dimensional offense.  Michigan’s three poor defensive performances have come against Brian Johnson, Juice Williams, and Daryll Clark.  Brian Hoyer is not on that level, and the Michigan front seven should be able to gang up on Javon Ringer and keep itself off the field.Otherwise, the other four road favorites should have enough in their arsenal to get wins.  That includes Penn State, who is capable of making a big statement in the de facto Big Ten Championship.  The offense hasn’t been slowed yet this year, and the Buckeyes will only be able to keep them in check for so long.

Quick -- name the 3rd best team in the Big Ten!  You might have to get your hands dirty.  You’re not sifting through grade-A football anymore.  But no worries, you’ll find something.  What did you come up with?... that can’t be right.  Minnesota? Northwestern? Michigan State?  Illinois?  Okay, just abort this grizzly mission, then.  Listen, I know it’s been awhile but what more can I say about this season now that most teams are already halfway through the conference schedule.  In the span of 10 minutes sitting in a bar in Madison, Wisconsin, I watched the winningest program in the history of the sport lose to Toledo at home, and saw Juice Williams throw for 440 yards yet lose at home to Minnesota.  A few hours later, I sat in Camp Randall Stadium to witness a once-Top 10 team that had lost 2 games at home in 4 years get beat by 41 points before a typically infamously raucous home crowd.  So what gives? This is truly a very topsy-turvy season for some of the more common reasons, and some deeper reasons as well.  While turnovers and poor quarterback play have been significantly responsible for the craziness that has occurred, it can not be overlooked that there are some serious tides that are changin’.  For anyone who wondered, Michigan football will never quite be the way it has been for the last 40 years.  I’m not saying they won’t be very good, and at times, better than they’ve been.  All I’m saying is 2008 Michael Jackson resembles 1980 Michael Jackson more than the 2008 Michigan Wolverines resemble the Bo/Carr Wolverines – and that’s even disregarding the Adidas logo on the unis.

Well, Oklahoma and Texas made it to the game this year with their respective top 5 rankings intact.  That is rare, as the teams usually choke the week leading up to it in "trap games".  This year's game should be a good matchup of two great passers in Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy.  Both are in the Heisman hunt and should finish the season with some great numbers.  The point of interest for me is not the stellar play of both QBs, but the lack of commentary on these two teams.  The media constantly speaks of what USC needs to do to get back to the title game or which SEC team will be there to face them.  I have news for the stupid media: Get over your East/West coast bias!  Oklahoma is probably going to end up playing BYU in the title game, in fact, I hope it is Boise St. vs. BYU so all the haters of anything non-SEC can shut up.  True, the SEC is a great conference, but they all have to play each other.  There should not be a 1 loss team from the SEC in the title game over an undefeated (even if they are from the mountain west).  Now, on to the game:

So I normally title my Monday blog: Monday Mourning due to being hungover from a full day of drinking and watching sports, hence the “mourning” because I have to get up, go to work, puke in the bathroom, and subsequently fall asleep in all of my meetings and get absolutely no work done. But today is different, mainly due to the fact that CBS’s and Fox’s regional coverage of NFL games in my area was HORRIBLE. Games that had a spread of +11 with no fantasy implications at all were being aired, so I went and watched polo (you know, the sport where guys on horses trot around and whack a ball with mallets). I had never been to a polo game before but we decided to go due to the possibility of attractive females (there are always beautiful women at horse events). We mingled with a few and made up some elaborate lies that we were just checking out the competition and had our horses stabled a few miles away. We were obviously out of place, with our cheers of “nice pass man!” and “shoooooot it!” but we wholeheartedly plan on attending it every Sunday for the rest of the season – pending what NFL games are on of course.

I’m not sure if you saw the BYU/Washington game last night, if you didn’t, let me set the stage for you…

In a game that was back and forth all game; BYU is up 27-20, and looking to extend the longest current winning streak in the NCAA.  Washington puts together a great drive in the final minute of the 4th Qtr.  With 10 seconds left, and Washington with a 3rd and goal from about the 5yd. line, Mr. Washington himself, QB Jake Locker scrambles and somehow wills himself into the end zone for the touchdown.  So there it is, we are going to overtime!  Not so fast my friend, there is a yellow hanky on the turf.  The penalty is excessive celebration.  As Locker ran into the end zone, with pure exhilaration, he tossed the ball in the air and jumped into a teammates arms. The touchdown counts, but the extra point will have to be kicked from the 20 yd line instead of the 3 yd. line.  And you probably can guess what happens next…the kick is blocked, Washington loses by one point!
