Everyone knows that little kids are dumb.  They will pull a pot of boiling water down on themselves, or put small objects in their mouths, or grab sharp objects by the wrong end.  Parents in the animal kingdom may have to expend all of their energy protecting their young from outside predators, but human parents know that most of the time, the biggest danger to a child is himself.  Protecting a baby from himself is a tiring job for sure, but if the baby survives to adulthood with minimal injuries, it can be quite rewarding.

Last night Brigham Young University, my alma mater, suffered a devastating defeat on the football field.  This season, the slogan for the Cougars has been, “The Quest,” meaning the quest for perfection.  We ended last season ranked seventeenth in the nation, and went on to narrowly beat UCLA in the Las Vegas Bowl with a blocked field goal as time expired.  The season’s stars, Max Hall and Harvey Unga, were only in their second and first seasons, respectively, so we had high hopes for 2008.  We rolled out to a 6-0 start and we were climbing the rankings.  Just yesterday I read an article on ESPN.com that said that the Cougars might have a shot at the National Championship Game (this is ESPN.com, okay? This isn’t just some overzealous zoobie gushing about his beloved football team in an editorial published in The Daily Universe).

My first official blog was titled “BYU: Legitimate Threat.”  It detailed why BYU deserved to be placed in a BCS bowl game in the post-season.  It is obvious and extremely unfortunate that I cannot post that.  Thursday night, BYU played TCU in a game that recalled back to the days of Gary Crowton and Matt Berry.  I have not been so annoyed with a football game since Boise State beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl (and I’m an Idahoan, so I feel fine about being a BSU hater).  But more specifically, I haven’t been so frustrated watching a BYU game since BYU lost to Utah in 2005.

Congratulations to the Houston Texans and Coach Gary Kubiak on their first win!!!

I will write more later, but this BCS mess is driving me crazy!

The BCS is a bad joke. Not, because the championship game is a bad joke. Rather, it is a joke because the polls are a joke.

Well, Oklahoma and Texas made it to the game this year with their respective top 5 rankings intact.  That is rare, as the teams usually choke the week leading up to it in "trap games".  This year's game should be a good matchup of two great passers in Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy.  Both are in the Heisman hunt and should finish the season with some great numbers.  The point of interest for me is not the stellar play of both QBs, but the lack of commentary on these two teams.  The media constantly speaks of what USC needs to do to get back to the title game or which SEC team will be there to face them.  I have news for the stupid media: Get over your East/West coast bias!  Oklahoma is probably going to end up playing BYU in the title game, in fact, I hope it is Boise St. vs. BYU so all the haters of anything non-SEC can shut up.  True, the SEC is a great conference, but they all have to play each other.  There should not be a 1 loss team from the SEC in the title game over an undefeated (even if they are from the mountain west).  Now, on to the game:

WEEK SIX COLLEGE FOOTBALL RANKINGS

25. GT (4-1)
Considering the fact that a 3-point loss in Blacksburg is the only blemish on its record, Georgia Tech deserves to be ranked in the top 25. In his first year in Atlanta, Paul Johnson is definitely exceeding expectations.

On September 6, 2008 Jake Locker nearly capped the miracle come back against BYU. With two measly seconds left he ran through a couple BYU would be tackles into the end zone for a touchdown. Locker threw (despite all the euphemisms the ESPN commentators have used like flip or toss) the ball into the air drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The potentially game tying extra point was moved back 15 yards. For a collegiate kicker, one that is receiving a good education for kicking a oblong ball through the uprights, a 35 yard extra point should not be too difficult.

The BYU offense, outside of a couple of turnovers, has played to absolute perfection the first couple of weeks. To add insult to opposing defenses injury, BYU's Offense and Defense are just going to get better. Max Hall is a stud junior quarterback and heisman candidate, Harvey UNGA is a sophmore 250 pound running/receiving threat, and Dennis Pitta, a Junior, is arguably the best Tight End in the country. To make matters worse? Austin Collie, the junior #1 recevier, should also be coming back as well as Stud Freshman left tackle Matt Reynolds.

Being an avid BYU fan, I believe we have one of the best and arguably THE BEST offense in the country. I can not see how any defense can possibly stop us. BYU has one of the best offensive lines in the country, averaging a behemoth 6 foot 6 inches and 330 pounds. This is absurd for any level, not just college football. To top that off, if you somehow get by this huge line, you have two 250 pounds of Polynesian Fury running at you in Fui Vakapuna followed by Harvey Unga. So if you plan on stacking the box, you only have to worry about Heisman Candidate Max Hall throwing to sure handed receivers Austin Collie, Michael Reed, and Mackey Candidate Dennis Pitta.

When most people see the Mountain West Football, they think of three teams: Brigham Young, Utah, and Texas Christian University. Over the past couple of years no one could blame them, as they not only won games inside the conference, but purely dominated all other foes. This year is different, shown by week 3 of the season. BYU obliterated UCLA 59-0, TCU took care of Stanford at home. Not much has been made of UNLV's huge victory over then 15th ranked Arizona State and normal bottom feeder New Mexico beating a solid Arizona team. One thing is for certain, this conference is proving to be just as good as the others.
