My parents came in to twon from Atlanta for the USF football game. It was quite emotional not only to see my family, who I miss every single day, but to attend my first USF game as an alumni. Despite the intense sunburn, the day was awesome. We sat pretty high up in the third section, but just about dead center. I actually like watching the game from that angle because you can see everything really well. The sun was behind us, and after halftime the rain clouds were coming in and a breeze started blowing.
Enough about the weather. USF's defense was lacking the the first quarter to say the least. The D allowed only 13 points, and Grothe actually let the rest of the team (notably Tauras Johnson and Mike Ford) bask in some of the spotlight. Halftime came and went, the cheap watery tast of Bud Light passed our lips, and we cheered the Bulls on to their triumphant 45-13 win against the Syracuse Orange(men).
Some notable highlights not necessarily involving the game: the amazingly calm and rational political discussion I had with my dad during halftime; the disgust we all shared over the Hooters promotion (c'mon, you gotta hit that bird!); the spirit with which my dad tried to help my catch phrase "Juice the Orangemen" catch on (thanks, Dad!); the lovely girl talk I shared with my mom and my brother's girlfriend about weddings and babies and boys; and the overall joy I experienced being with all the people that I love the most. Join all those things with my favorite sport and my favorite team, and I was one happy gal.
The Bulls, led by Grothe, but also by Grant Gregory (the backup QB went in during the 4th quarter and a member of my group for a project my last semester in my Communication in Media class) played a great game, reminding everyone that USF is more than a Cinderella story. USF football is a force to be reckconed with. We want the #1 spot, we want to win a bowl game, we want it all bad. And the bandwagoners that left in the last 10 minutes of the game (we stayed until the clock wound ALL the way down) just don't understand the pride some of us feel when we see green and gold.
The BCS poll came out and ranked USF at #21, but I have a feeling my boys will pull out another W this weekend when they face kind of rival Louisville. GO BULLS!
