What a Homecoming (warning: personal post) posted on 10/20/2008

My parents came in to twon from Atlanta for the USF football game. It was quite emotional not only to see my family, who I miss every single day, but to attend my first USF game as an alumni. Despite the intense sunburn, the day was awesome. We sat pretty high up in the third section, but just about dead center. I actually like watching the game from that angle because you can see everything really well. The sun was behind us, and after halftime the rain clouds were coming in and a breeze started blowing.

Enough about the weather. USF's defense was lacking the the first quarter to say the least. The D allowed only 13 points, and Grothe actually let the rest of the team (notably Tauras Johnson and Mike Ford) bask in some of the spotlight. Halftime came and went, the cheap watery tast of Bud Light passed our lips, and we cheered the Bulls on to their triumphant 45-13 win against the Syracuse Orange(men).

OH NO! posted on 10/06/2008

The Bulls, playing a Thursday game last week, lost to Pitt. I'll say that again: the Bulls lost to Pitt. The score, a heartbreaking 26-21, had to have left a bad taste in the mouths of the players and the coaches, because it certainly didn't sit well with the fans.

Here's my criticism of the Bulls: last year we were the Cinderella story of the NCAA. We went from being completely unknown, just a young team with a dream, to being ranked #2 in the nation at one point. We ended up fudging it up towards the end of the season last year, and all the bandwagoners who joined the Green & Gold cause quickly died off. And I think the spirit of the players died off, too. It seems like once we are losing, we have a hard time picking ourselves up, brushing ourselves off, and continuing to kick butt. We're like an insecure teenager, who just gives up when things get hard. And that's just how the fans are, too. Sure it's tough to see your team lose, but you gotta have some loyalty. Look at Miami Dolphins' fans: they stick with it, and, heck, this year, miraculously, the Dolphins are kind of good.

These are the Bulls I remember posted on 09/29/2008

Playing NC State on Saturday, an unranked team that at least attempts to put up a fight (don't I remember them beating West Virginia during Week 1?), the USF Bulls finally showed up. The Bulls finally looked like the team that came to win a name for themselves on the national stage last year.

NC State, as I said, puts up a "fight", but still, the Bulls pulled out an impressive 41-10 win. An easy victory for the boys in green and gold.

UPDATE: Brouce Mompremier is still recovering, though he's been cleared of any severe spinal cord injury. He's back in Tampa recovering. I still haven't heard any official statement on if or when he'll return to the field this season.

This week's stomping of NC State secures USF a #10 spot! GO BULLS!

Bulls win, but at what cost? posted on 09/21/2008

Last night the Bulls beat FIU. Unfortunately, they paid a heavy price for the win. Bruce Mompremeir, one of the Bulls strongest stars, was involved in a collision that sent him to the hospital in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Going for a tackle at an awkward angle, Mompremeir hit his opponent and was insantly knocked out. An ambulance drove onto the field and he was airlifted to the Miami-Dade hospital.

But he wasn't the only injured Bull last night-- George Selvie anxiously watched his teammates from the sidelines with an iced right ankle. With these two key players out, it's no wonder they could only pull off an embarrassing 17-9 win over the arguably terrible FIU team (who could carely manage any completions and racked up plenty of stupid penalties).

Let's hope the Bulls can start picking up the pace. C'mon, Bulls, you're ranked and you keep winning, but just barely, and against much lesser teams. Even with these two devestating injuries, we've still got Grothe (and talented back-up quarterback Grant Gregory), Mike Ford, and Cedric Hill. We've got to start making some smarter decisions.

USF Alums play with the big boys posted on 09/17/2008
Just a quick head's up: make sure to support USF alums during their post Green & Gold days. My favorite Bull to watch in the NFL? Mike Jenkins (former Bulls CB #4) playing CB for the Dallas Cowboys (the boys from my place of birth!). Jenkins is fast, so make sure you keep your eyes open for Jenkins in the Navy & Silver as #31. Congrats, Mike!
