Saturday Ramblings

He just keeps ticking, worn out old Greg Maddox won his 18th Gold Glove this past week.

The playoff seedings in the MLL are set now.  Argonaut as the number one seed gets the 3rd place team in the WAC, Calaveras in the number 2 spot gets to drive down to Escalon and Summerville travels to Modesto for a game with Central Catholic.  Prospects don't look too good for an advance to the second round of any of the three teams, but as my good friend Ben always says, "You never know."

The Calaveras Redskins secured the second position with a convincing win over Summerville last night.  Summerville presented a glimpse at the future, with a solid sophomore Quarterback and a core of receivers that will be able to challange Argonaut and Calaveras in the upcoming years.  The Redskin JV squad upped their record to 9-0.

Our Wolverine update, Michigan takes on Minnesota in a morning affair. In what always would have been an easy win on their way to the annual showdown with Ohio State, is now just another sad chapter in a sad season.

How bout those dogs?  The Fresno State Bulldogs, the take on anyone, anytime, anywhere Bulldogs.  Great philosophy, however, the Boise State whatevers have actually executed that philosophy.  The Bulldogs have once again turned early season promises into a disappointing finish. Isn't it time for them to regroup and focus on their own league.  Take care of business in their house and then go outside.  It's nice to beat UCLA, but the taste gets sour when you lose to the likes of Nevada.  Baseball starts in just a few short months.

Why does everyone say they want discipline?  They want these high priced athletes held accountable.   They complain out special prvileges begin granted to these players  Yet, when Mike Singeltary tells Vernon Davis to hit the showers during the second half and the Raiders release an underperforming, overpaid cornerback, people are outraged.  The Raider situation is a continuing example of how far the Raiders have fallen from grace.  Another poor player personnel decision by the Godfather.  However, Singletary seems to be just what the doctor ordered in dealing with some of todays professional athlete.

Davis is representative of todays athlete, overpaid, underachieving and mainly worried about himself.  If more coaches took Singletary's stance, maybe we would be able to watch a game when players didn't indulge in self gratification every time they make a routine play.

The good news this week is that the Raiders did not sell out and we will not have to watch them on TV on Sunday.  Have you ever seen such a bad game?  The new 49ers debut on Monday night.
