I Can See Clearer Now the Rain Is Gone

Just like the popular '70s song by Main Ingredient, the picture for next year's incoming recruiting class is looking a lot clearer with some recent comments from Those in the Know. It seems that the football Wildcats, who were rumored to be offering California JUCO quarterback Brad McClellan a scholarship to play quarterback, have cleared the air over his recruitment, saying that McClellan is being recruited as an athlete and not as a quarterback.

With two heralded quarterbacks coming in next year, the recruitment of McClellan had a lot of Cats Fans holding their breath. Did this mean Mossakowski's injury was worse than expected? Did it mean Newton was having misgivings over committing to UK? Well, the Wildcat faithful can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Moss and Newton are as firm in their commitments as ever before.

On a certain level, I could see why the staff would want to recruit another quarterback. After last year's fiasco of an offense, having a legitimate, proven quarterback who has competed at the college level-albeit at the junior college ranks-gives you a buffer of comfort in case your starting quarterback gets hurt or is not performing well.

But on a slightly larger hand, offering another scholarship to a quarterback when you already have two top prospects coming in can give off the impression that you don't have a favorable opinon of how those quarterbacks are going to perform in your offense. It could open the door for other schools to further that notion and steal a top quarterback away from your school.

The good news from recruiting McClellan as an athlete is the fact that this kis IS an athlete. He is currently listed as 6"4', 205 pounds, and running a 4.55 40. Wide Receiver anyone?
