College Fantasy Football Preview -- The Senior Citizen

We do have a senior citizen in the football league; he's well into his 30's.. been married for years.  Even has himself a couple of children and chronic back problems.  That's what happens when you get old.  Years ago, he used to be a one man band, but he's developed a sense of team over the last season.  He was 6-7 last year, but he was knocking on the door to a much bigger season.

QB:  All 3 QB's belong to Big 12 rosters.  Landry Jones, Blaine Gabbert and Garrett Gilbert.  They are all in very good situations with Landry and Blaine being the big 2 this season and Gilbert learning the ropes and leaning on an all american defense and a stable of running backs until he's ready for bigger action.  Landry has more weapons than these guys.  Blaine can also put some puntos on the board in the right matchups.. including one against pitiful Illinois.

RB:  Apparently, this is RB U.  John Clay, Nic Grigsby, Keola Antonin, Ryan Williams, Jermie Calhoun, Larry Caper and super freshman Marcus Lattimore.  Clay is getting Heisman type talk, remember the last back from Wisconsin that was in Heisman contention.  He just happened to win it and do things like this to people.  Grigsby and Antonin are Thunder and Lightning in Arizona, Williams is a mean beast at Virginia Tech and Calhoun has one more year to learn behind Demarco Murray before it's his show in Oklahoma.  Lattimore started as a true freshman already at South Carolina.  Plenty of backs, plenty of potential.. and already plenty of production.

WR:  As good as Josh is at RB, he's a tad weak at the WR position.  He has 2 Missouri guys in Wes Kemp, a former Wisconsin recruit, and Jerrell Jackson.  Detron Lewis is at pass happy Texas Tech, who promises to be more balanced this season.  He's got a Florida WR, they will throw more than years passed.  To be honest, I'm not looking for much production out of this group right now, if they can contribue anything.. The Senior Citizen should be happy.

TE:  Blake Ayles is a body at USC where they dropped down 49 points against Hawaii, so they could find the end zone all year long.  Joe Halahuni could be a sleeper TE in Oregon State where they have the Rodgers brothers getting most of the attention.  I'll bet he turns out like Marv Cook, what an animal.

K:  Caleb Sturgis down in the swamps of Florida is Josh's kicker.  Rumor has it that Florida can score some points so he should get plenty of work all year long.

D/ST:  LSU might not be able to score, but they also don't give up many points and they feature one of the best corners in the nation.. that's good news for a team that needs fantasy points.  As long as the matchup is decent, LSU is going to get sacks and turnovers and not give up many points which could lead to a few surprise victories on it's own.

Worst Case:  Blaine hits a sophomore slump, Landry gets hurt and he's left with an ineffective Blaine and coddled Gilbert at QB.  Clay eats his way out of playing time in Wisconsin and none of the WR's step up.  This isn't all that far fetched, we remember Sam Bradford went down last year and that John Clay does look like this.  This happens and The Senior Citizen is going to have to start collecting his social security a little bit early.

Best Case:  Landry continues to shine and Blaine is the perfect compliment, Clay is more like Ron Dayne than Maurice Clarett.  One of the other backs gets consistent carries and a WR steps out of nowhere to shine.  If all goes well, and I mean everything clicks, including the WR's there is no reason that Josh shouldn't be in top 4 contention with the QB and RB play.

Overall:  I'm not sold on the WR's, I don't know if they could even catch a cold.  Clay's body size and injuries worry me a little bit and who knows who else is going to split carries.  I think this is a solid fantasy team, given the right plays, but has a bit too many question marks to declare them a potential champion.  This is an 8 win team, I believe.

Keywords: Blaine Gabbert, college fantasy football, Garrett Gilbert, John Clay, Landry Jones, life alert, LSU, Maurice Clarett, Ron Dayne, senior citizen
