Perrins may or may not be a manager for a highly ranked D1 program.. thankfully this league is for fun only because I went through that same manager training and remember that managers are actually considered team members (except tutoring, bowl gifts and any other way the program can hold them down) and subject to NCAA rules. Therefore, if this were a money league there is both risk and reward involved, so he would be under that umbrella. There is both risk and reward involved.. it's called pridge, but the NCAA doesn't care about that. They also don't care about the recruiting violations that John Calipari breaks at every school he's been at or that their newest hot recruit from the Chicago area said they asked for something like $100,000 to play there... Kentucky only mad because they went to the press about it. Regardless, Perrins is coming off a major year.. for him at 7-6ish. He's already talking big when he texted me and told me, "I have the best skill position players in the league." Whoa, easy turbo, you also have the biggest sense of overconfidence in the league. That's like saying that Kuma's Corner has the best burgers in the nation. While it COULD be true, there is just no way to prove it.
QB: He has the big names for sure.. Terrelle Pryor and Matt Barkley. That's it, those 2 hosses are his QB's and while they get a lot of hype, they also haven't lived up to the billing... yet. Pryor is being billed (no pun intended) as a Heisman candidate for Ohio State because of his potential and game against Oregon. Lets not forget that Oregon can't tackle a homework assignment... or a guy stealing a laptop and projector for that matter. Pryor plays in a conservative offense and relies on not turning the ball over and the defense to win games. Plus, he has character issues that could come into play in the locker room. This guy is full of great comments. You can't make this stuff up. I swear. Either way, he could put up 40 one week and 10 the next.
RB: He had Jordan Todman and sent him packing which leaves him a tad thin at the RB position where he has bodies, but right now only one bona fide star, Dion Lewis. What about Demarco Murray you ask? Well, when Demarco carries the ball for a full seaosn without splitting time and getting hurt.. then we'll call him a star. He has that potential and that flair, but he didn't do it like Lewis did last season. He'll need Murray to be healthy all season long because Ralph Bolden may or may not have an ACL. Ontario McCalebb is a star in the making in Auburn and should get more touches this season. Antwon Bailey from Cuse will split carries this season before being the main man as a senior. The other few backs are future types that won't be more than role players for their teams this year.
WR: Adding Ryan Broyles is a huge move because nobody's stopped the kid yet and nobody will this year. He also has Jeff Fuller at A+M, Brandon Caleb, Kyle Prater and underrated juniors Tandon Doss and Greg Childs. This is a deep position, all accounts say Prater is going to be a man child. Tandon Doss is underrated in that pesky Indiana spread attack, Childs has Ryan Mallet heaving it to him and Fuller is a top 5 fantasy WR going into the season. That's some firepower.
TE: One TE on the roster and that's Jordan Reed from The Gator Chomp. The Gators should hit the air more often this season, but who knows if Perrins can rely on this former QB turned TE and his bum knee. If all goes well, he won't have to worry about this position.
K: 2 deep at the kicker position with Spencer Lanning and Grant Ressel. Perrins should be able to play the match up game to find whatever one works best, clearly, that's the majority of the Missouri games because South Carolina scores as often as these guys. And these guys.
D/ST: Solid, trades away OSU and gets Iowa. Iowa can get after it, full of sacks and not giving up points. Very good pick up, they even find the end zone from time to time. This is a great pick up for Perrins and it shows that he understands the game and is maturing into a potentially elite team owner/coach.
Worst Case: The QB's are more hype than game, Murray and/or Lewis handle the ball too much and one of them breaks down. Broyles gets hurt again, Fuller gets a case of Mike Sherman and Prater isn't ready to be the man yet. I'd make something up for Iowa but they are so sound they make me sick.. and frustrated. This all happens and Perrins still ends up with a chance for 4th or 5th place in the league.
Best Case: Pryor breaks out of Tressel ball, Murray scores 20 TD's, Lewis adds 20 more and Broyles and Fuller continue the Big 12 offensive highlight reel. That happens, and it easily could and this kid is dancing in the streets of Glendale, Arizona playing for a league championship. Perrins can then take his claim to the bank of having the best skill players in the league.
Overall: Perrins appears to have too deep of a team to not make a run at the league title; he'll need to play the right guys at the right time to maximize value and points to take a shot at the record for most points in a season. I don't think he'll get it, but he'll be darn close. I'd consider his season a failure if he's not playing for the championship when all is said and done.
