Scuba takes over for a depleted roster inherited from the Big Mattbowski. Mattbowski didn't leave much in the will, in fact, some people think that it's like having a long lost relative die and hoping there is something for you in the will.. only to find out that you're left with debt. Scuba's roster is coming off a 4-9 season including a beat down loss in their bowl game. Not shockingly, Scuba's roster is full of Michigan players whom The Big Mattbowski loved... perhaps, that's why they were so bad last year.
QB: Ryan Mallett is clearly the most talented player on the team and the only shot week in and week out that Scuba has to win. The rest of his QB's appear to be non-factors like Tate Forcier and Tajih Boyd. Neither appears to be a starter for their teams and Blake Bell certainly won't start down in Oklahoma.
RB: This position is slightly better than the QB in terms of depth. Roy Helu Jr can score some points for a pounding Nebraska ground game and Scuba grabbed Anthony Allen early in the draft. Yes, that same Anthony Allen that the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles dropped after he went from Louisville to become the Ramblin Wreck From Georgia Tech. Isaiah Pead figures to get some touches up in Cincy and Montell Harris can run the ball albeit with a poor offense in Boston College.
WR: Another position without many stars or depth saw Scuba take 2 of them early in the draft: Jermaine Kearse and Ashlon Jeffrey. I really like both of them; they are big targets and the main guy at each school. Jeffrey is at SC where Air Spurrier hasn't done what they thought he'd do offensively and Kearse is Jake Locker's main target in Washington. Ronald Johnson plays at U$C, which is supposed to be a big deal and Leonard Hankerson is a senior down at Thug U. Nukeese Richardson spent more time committing crimes than practicing and is now no longer a member of Division 1 football. Frankly, I see this position going Ted Ginn Jr. this season.
TE: A deep, number wise position with a robust 4 on the roster.. easily the most in the league. Michigan Kevin Kroger found his way onto a roster last year (insert giggles). Andrew Jones plays down at Missouri where they used TE's heavily recently and Dwayne Allen is a monster passing threat in Clemson. Scuba also smartly drafted Austin Haywood a FR from Oklahoma to build up for the future. I think the TE position is going to take taken to the laundromat this season.. early and often.
K: Scuba is hoping Cade Foster can garner some points down in the bayou of Alabama. He'll have him for his entire college career if he's able to keep Nick Saban happy.
D: One of the best in the nation.. Beamer Ball, Virginia Tech points up points nearly every week with their swarming defense and amazing special teams.
Best Case: Mallet goes bananas and one of the kids starts for the entire year. Helu and Allen become Thunder and Lightning with Kearse of Jeffrey posting a surprising year. That's a lot of if's, however.. even with all this I don't see Scuba winning more than 5 games this season.
Worst Case: Mallet flops like he did in his start against Wisconsin.. or worse, he gets hurt. Paul Johnson spreads the running game around at Georgia Tech and Jeffrey gets stuck in the new, worse Air Spurrier offense. This could happen, and it could get scary for Scuba in no time.
Overall: Scuba settles into 3-5 wins and a top draft pick next season with a chance to reload the roster. He should hope a QB starts so he can deal Mallet to somebody in need and send Allen for young players or draft picks. In other words.. Scuba has no chance at being a premier player in his first season.. it's not his fault, however.
